Gigapixel Imagery
Derek first started stitching images together in 2006. During this time, he captured 1000’s of images of Christchurch, from the Port Hills.
These images are now a time capsule showing how Christchurch used to look before the devastating earthquakes.

Gigapixel photography captures images with extraordinary detail, allowing viewers to zoom from a wide panorama to microscopic levels of detail. This technology is ideal for documenting artworks, architectural features, and historical sites where preservation of fine detail is essential.

Gigapixel images, taken from a high view point, can wrap round 360 degrees. Every pixel can be annotated, with interactive elements displaying information about the image for the viewer to explore. Social tagging can also be included with the viewer sharing a particular location and zoom level with their friends or colleagues. Gigapixel imagery can act as a time capsule, showing changes to our environment over decades of time.
One of our favorite aspects of a Gigapixel image is the concertina effect. Distant mountains appear to tower over the city, details lots with smartphones or wide angle lenses are brought into view.
