• March is the month for rainbows in Oamaru.

Here we see a beautiful example rising above Oamaru Harbour, reflected light from the clouds lighting the green waters below.

  • Christchurch City East, one of Derek's earlier panoramic photos of Christchurch City, as seen from the Port Hills.

Created on the 6th of October 2007 using a powerful telephoto lens, hundreds of images were taken of the city then stitched together using Autopano software by Alexandre Jenny, of Kolor fame.

This image is the East side of a larger panoramic, the West side is also available to purchase, or you can contact us for a special edition full sized print.

This image is also a zoomable interactive tour in our Gigapixel section.

Sit back and take time to explore.

  • Oamaru's beautiful stone buildings are miniature worlds, each wall is inhabited by flora and fauna that started to colonize the rock as soon as the blade cut and the face was open to the elements.

Here we have the side of Steampunk HQ, moss and plants flow along the lines of moisture created by old and damaged spouting.

  • Gibraltar Rock, nestled in the Port Hills near Christchurch, at sunset. Atop the rock a lone figure stands with arms outstretched, warmed by the last rays.

This shot was planned well in advance, hoping for a clear day during a narrow window of opportunity, we managed to capture the sunset at just the right moment.

  • GoldingArts Fine Art cards are printed onto photographic paper, the cards hand made and inspected before being sealed in a protective envelope. Perfect for framing.

The canvas has string attached and ready to hang. Semi-gloss finish with super vibrant colours.

240gsm synthetic Canvas creates crisp lines and a sharp image.

32mm deep. Kiln dried, renewable NZ radiata pine prevents warping.

Canvases are easily cleaned with a damp cloth.

  • Moraki boulders lie on the beach close to the small village of Moraki, on the Waitaki coast.

As the sea erodes the cliff, the boulder slowly emerge until the erosion causes them to fall to the beach below.

A major tourist attraction for the region, the boulders attract visitors from across the world.

The boulders are concretions ,  a hard, compact mass of matter formed by the precipitation of mineral cement within the spaces between particles. Occasionally, concretions contain a fossil, either as its nucleus or as a component that was incorporated during its growth but concretions are not fossils themselves.

  • A Digital artwork showing the beautiful Oamaru Harbour at sunset, the boats still lit by the setting sun.

  • Penny Farthings abound in Oamaru. One of the highlights of the year is the Penny Farthing race held during the Victorian Heritage Celebrations in November of each year.

Be sure to have a photograph taken outside the Whitestone Civic Trust building on the Ordinary cycle (Penny Farthing) outside the front door when you visit!

  • Pier Number 2, part of an exhibition Derek had in a Sumner art Gallery wayyyy back in time!

At night, the Pier is lit with changing hues, different colours lighting the base, and the waves below.

Here, the tide receding, we can just make out the ghostly form of a fisherman at the end of the Pier.

  • In 2008 Derek archived the entire collection of Stained Glass in Christchurch Cathedral. Powerful lenses were used to capture every detail of the windows. A cherry picker was used to gain access to a perfect viewpoint for the Rose window - eye level with the center. Over 300 10mp images were stitched together to create the final complete Rose Window.

Sadly, the Rose Window of Christchurch Cathedral was destroyed in the 2011 earthquake.

The Rose Window photograph was used in the creation of the Cardboard Transitional Cathedral designed by Shigeru Ban.

  • The ANZ Bank was built in 1912. Located on High Street, Christchurch it sustained substantial damage in the Earthquakes and was demolished in 2011.

  • The old ANZ building in Christchurch, sadly damaged in the 22 February 2011 earthquake, was demolished.

When I moved to Christchurch, I lived in the backpackers across the street for a month and used to visit the Inspirations rock and crystal shop at the street level of this building. Towards the end of summer days the sun used to light the top floor tower whilst the streets below were in deep shadow.

The is a stitched panorama, in the original larger size you can see a sparrow coming in to land at close to the top window.

This image is also available as an A4 to A0 print.

  • Behind Jacksons Pub in Otira a dark path winds up into the native forest.

after a half hours walk you come to a glade filled with the sound of water. A beautiful waterfall cascades down from the mountain side into a dark pool. A rock appears to block the entrance to a cave behind the pool keeping us out.... or keeping something in?

  • Steampunk HQ is located in the former Meeks Grain Elevator Building, a historic building registered with by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as a Category II structure.

  • A tilt Shift effect is used to create a toy town!

Oamaru as seen from Forrester Heights, the hill overlooking Oamaru on Cape Wanbrow.
